I’m using an NRF24L01 wireless module, but the range I’m getting is much shorter than expected based on the datasheet. What factors affect the range, and how can it be improved?

Are there practical ways to extend it, such as antenna upgrades, hardware modifications, or adjustments to settings like data rate and transmission power?

The actual range of the NRF24L01 is usually less than the datasheet claims because it depends a lot on power supply quality, antenna, interference, and module settings.

First, make sure the module has a stable 3.3 V supply with a capacitor close to VCC and GND, since these modules are sensitive to voltage drops. Next, antenna orientation and placement matter a lot—keep it upright, away from metal objects, and use modules with an external antenna (PA+LNA version) if you need longer range.

At the software side, lowering the data rate to 250 kbps and setting the power level to maximum usually gives a big improvement. Also try using a channel that’s not overlapping with busy Wi-Fi (e.g., around channel 76).

Finally, remember that walls, metal, and people can block 2.4 GHz signals, so even small changes in placement can make a noticeable difference.
